A record opening stand has powered England to an overwhelming victory in the second ODI of the Royal London series against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.Alex Hales and Jason Roy both thrashed centuries as England completed a ten-wicket win with 95 balls remaining. It is just the sixth such victory England have achieved in their ODI history and the highest score against which any side has achieved it. It is the fifth time Sri Lanka have been defeated by ten wickets in an ODI.Their stand was not only a record for England’s opening pair – overhauling Vikram Solanki and Marcus Tresocthick’s 200 partnership against South Africa in 2003 – but the highest for any wicket in ODIs by England batsmen. Previously, Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott – who put on 250 together against Bangladesh here in 2010 – held the record.England have suffered often at Sri Lankan hands in ODI cricket. Apart from the 2006 ODI series which Sri Lanka won 5-0 – including overhauling England’s apparently impressive 321 at Leeds with 12-and-a-half overs to spare – there have been memorable, and critical, defeats in the last two World Cups. But, at the ground where England’s ODI revolution started just over a year ago, they demonstrated that the balance of power may have shifted with a devastatingly one-sided victory. This Sri Lanka side, missing the world-class stars with which they had become familiar, lacked the batting firepower to make first use of an excellent surface and the bowling potency to prevent England’s batsmen from galloping to victory. Not for a moment did it appear that Sri Lanka had set a competitive target. And while Hales and Roy played themselves in relatively calmly – both men took 55 deliveries over their first half-century – the manner with which they pulverised the Sri Lankan bowling once set was reminiscent of the punishment that used to be handed out to English bowlers by Sanath Jayasuiriya on a regular basis. At one stage they struck four sixes in succession – Hales punishing Seekkuga Prasanna for three sixes and two fours in five successive balls – as they made use of an impressively hard, true wicket to skip down the pitch and hit over the top. Both men registered their highest ODI scores, with Roy making his first half-century in eight ODI innings and Hales making his sixth fifty-plus score (and second century) in seven successive ODIs. It is England’s first victory in five ODIs, following three defeats in a row in South Africa and Tuesday’s tie at Trent Bridge.Hales, using his reach to drive four of his sixes and slog-sweep two more, took just 36 balls over his second 50, while Roy, with four straight sixes, demonstrating both bat-speed and power, took 37. Sri Lanka’s frontline spinners took much of the flak, conceding 140 runs – including eight sixes – in 16.1 overs. It made it entirely understandable that one of the umpires, Bruce Oxenford, utilised an arm guard on his left arm to protect him should a ball be thrashed in his direction.Hales gave one clear chance, Danushka Gunathilaka at point missing a simple chance when the batsman had 126, but by then the game was all but decided. It was Roy who claimed the man-of-the-match award. As well as his century, he played a significant role in two run-outs, first swooping at backward point, picking up the ball in his left-handed, transferring it to his right and throwing down the stumps with a direct hit to dismiss the dangerous Kusal Perera, before managing another good pick-up and throw to punish Dinesh Chandimal’s attempt to set off for an optimistic single. It was part of an improved performance in the field from England. Although Hales, at second slip, was unable to cling on to a tough chance offered by Gunathilaka off Chris Woakes on 5, Adil Rashid delivered another well-controlled 10 overs of leg-spin (he has now conceded just 70 runs in 20 overs this series), Jonny Bairstow impressed the sell-out crowd with his outrageous pace and powerful throw as a boundary sweeper and David Willey held a brilliant catch at mid-on. He originally appeared to have misjudged the catch with some confusion as to whether to leave it to Hales, at mid-off, but, at the last moment, he launched himself full length and clung on to the ball.It all meant that Sri Lanka limped – both literally and metaphorically – to a total that always looked well under par. While Angelo Mathews passed a fitness test before the toss, he looked someway below his best and, when Chandimal also required on-field treatment having appeared to suffer a hamstring strain, it left the pair limited in both mobility and in terms of their speed between the wickets. Mathews was later unable to bowl, while Chandimal was unable to keep wicket and was replaced behind the stumps by Perera. The pair added 82 in 16 overs for the fourth wicket – easily the highest stand of the Sri Lanka innings – but, bearing in mind that England scored 408 in the last ODI on this ground (against New Zealand in June 2015), it always looked too sedate to prove match-winning. At one stage, they had to be content with 25 runs in succession picked up in singles. It could have been worse. At 191 for 7 in the 41st over, it seemed Sri Lanka might struggle to bat out their 50 overs. But a late rally from Upul Tharanga, becoming accustomed to his new role in the middle-order, and Suraj Randiv, who came into the side in place of seam-bowling allrounder Dasun Shanaka, at least gave Sri Lanka a chance. The pair thrashed 44 from the last four overs of the innings with Tharanga reaching a 46-ball half-century (with five fours and a six) and Randiv paddling, squirting and sprinting his way to 26 from 27 balls.Victory means that England have also taken an unassailable 13-3 lead in the Super Series. With three ODIs and one T20I to play, there are a maximum of eight points to play for in the rest of the series.

'The mood is very good' – Holder

West Indies captain Jason Holder expressed confidence in his squad and noted that the likes of Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard would want to make a statement on their return to the side

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-2016

Jason Holder was one of five players in the West Indies squad who participated in this year’s IPL•BCCI

West Indies captain Jason Holder struck an upbeat note on the eve of West Indies’ tri-series with South Africa and Australia, backing returning players like Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard to make an impact.”We’ve got a good squad. Many of the guys were in the World T20 squad and the World Cup, some of whom are carrying very good form from the IPL. We back the guys in the squad,” Holder said. “We’ve got Sunil Narine, who comes back after the problems with his action, and Kieron Pollard, who I’m sure has a statement to make. So, I’m really looking forward to this series.”Both Narine and Pollard had to withdraw from West Indies’ squad for the World T20 in March-April. Narine was still undergoing rehabilitative work on his action after it had been found illegal in November last year. Pollard had not yet recovered from a knee injury that had kept him away from competitive cricket since November. Both players returned to competitive cricket at the recently-concluded IPL.The inclusion of Narine and Pollard in the tri-series squad had been questioned by Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy, all of whom had been overlooked for the squad, presumably due to their non-participation in West Indies’ domestic 50-over competition, which is a criterion for national selection. Narine, who was serving his suspension, and Pollard, who was injured, did not participate in that tournament either. Responding to those questioning his inclusion, Pollard had appeared to imply that he did not know why he had not been selected for ODIs since October 2014.Despite such issues, Holder insisted that the squad was in good spirits and eagerly looking forward to the tri-series. “The mood is very good. Everybody is up for this series. We’ve had a bit of a break between the last one-day series and this one, so everyone is raring to go.”West Indies’ last one-day series was in Sri Lanka, in November; they lost 3-0. The World T20, in which they emerged champions, is the only limited-overs international cricket they have played in 2016. The lack of match practice showed, as they were beaten soundly in two practice matches against Barbados Select XI.”We were a little rusty, probably below par, for the practice games,” Holder admitted. “But we didn’t have the full squad either. We have guys coming back from the IPL, who have been playing cricket, and I expect good things from them.”West Indies’ first match of the tri-series is against South Africa on June 3.

Chandimal insists Sri Lanka still have belief

Despite a year in which Sri Lanka have lost 11 of 14 completed T20s and now been defeated inside three days in a Test, “one or two wins” could reverse fortunes, Dinesh Chandimal said

Andrew Fidel Fernando22-May-2016Despite a year in which Sri Lanka have lost 10 of 13 completed T20s and have now been defeated inside three days in a Test, “one or two wins” could reverse fortunes, Dinesh Chandimal said. Captain Angelo Mathews has used the words “embarrassing” and “humiliating” numerous times to describe Sri Lanka performances in the past year. Yet, Chandimal insisted, there is belief within the group that the losing streak can be arrested.”We are of course disappointed, but I think we’re in a good place,” he said. “We train hard and pick each other up. Our fitness is also being looked after. What’s important to us is get a win or two. If we can get those wins soon, I think we will have that confidence that we need to carry on doing that. We are a young team and maybe we especially need that momentum because of that. We’re all working very hard. I’m hopeful the victories will start from the next match.”Through both home and away series in 2015, Sri Lanka’s batsmen had admitted to have difficulty finding the balance between attack and defence in Tests. Few batsmen fell playing expansive strokes at Headingley, and both teams’ highest scorers – Jonny Bairstow and Kusal Mendis – had strike rates of over 75, though Alex Hales’ 86 was 206 balls in the making.”Almost every ball the English quicks bowled was what was needed at the time,” Chandimal said. “They are a very disciplined attack, and when they don’t give many bad balls, it’s important to work out how to keep that temperament and still score runs. If we had been somehow been able to score some runs and give them a good contest, we could have taken some joy from this.”Chandimal is among those now expected to lead the resurgence in this series, partly due to his relative seniority in the batting group, but also because of having had moderate success on recent tours of New Zealand. He was dismissed for 15 and 4 at Headingley – out in the first innings to a seaming, bouncing ball from Ben Stokes, before chopping the ball onto his stumps in the second innings, during the only over Moeen Ali was required to bowl in the game.”In the first innings, I came back, looked at the videos and talked with the coach, but it was a very good ball,” he said. “In the second innings I hadn’t anticipated the turn on that delivery. I think it’s fair to say I played a loose shot and I’m very disappointed by that. But I have confidence in the way I’m hitting the ball these days. Anderson is bowling very well, but there’s no huge difference between this attack and New Zealand’s.”Personally I’d love to get a century every time I play here. That is my vision when I go to a match. I’m always thinking about how I can get to a hundred. Once you spend that time in the middle you learn a lot as well.”Mathews said after the match that Sri Lanka would work on leaving decisively ahead of the Durham Test, but Chandimal felt his shortcomings were purely to do with temperament.”I don’t think there’s much to change at this stage. Technically I feel as if I am in a good place.”

Wolves Backed To Sign Liverpool Player This Summer

Wolves could sign Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho on loan in the summer transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Carvalho having a good season?

Wanderers have had a tough season to date, sitting 14th in the Premier League, but there have been signs of improvements under Julen Lopetegui. Admittedly, Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Leicester City was a bad result, but it looks as though they are doing enough to remain in the top flight beyond this season.

Once the campaign is over, it is crucial that Lopetegui is backed in the transfer market, as he looks to build his own squad moving forward.

One player who could potentially be available to sign on loan is Carvalho, who has struggled to make an impression in his first season at Liverpool. While he did score a last-gasp winner at home to Newcastle United early in the campaign, he has only started four league games in total.

Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho

Could Wolves sign Carvalho?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, transfer expert Jones claimed that the 20-year-old is an option for Wolves to sign on a temporary basis this summer:

"There is uncertainty about what happens with Fabio Carvalho. Firstly, it’s worth pointing out that he will not give up on making it with Liverpool. He’s very driven to ensure the move works out long-term. But this has been a tough season for all involved, and chances could be just as limited for him next season because Liverpool have to bounce back. That is going to mean top-level recruitment.

"I think a loan will be discussed for Carvalho. Fulham hoped it would become an option when he left them, but it never did. Marco Silva helped hugely with his breakthrough, and I’m sure he would welcome him back if the player is open to it. It is difficult to take a decision like that. From Carvalho’s perspective, it may feel like admitting defeat, and I did check out other moves that could be on the table.

"There has been nothing yet, but it sounds to me like Wolves could become an option. They are in an uncertain moment with players like Matheus Nunes and Ruben Neves, and an opportunity to sign someone like Carvalho, who is an adaptable attacking midfield player, would be a good fit."

Carvalho could be an intriguing signing by Wolves at the end of the season, with Lopetegui possibly seeing him as someone he can improve as a project. Granted, it hasn't worked out for him at Liverpool yet, but he remains a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Last season, he scored ten goals and registered eight assists for Fulham, helping them reach the Premier League in the process, and he could be deemed a good squad option who can play both out wide in and a central attacking midfield role.

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Carvalho as a "special" footballer, which highlights what a talent he is, and if the Reds are willing to let him leave for a year, Molineux could be a good fit for him, especially given their Portuguese element.

16 y/o Could Leave Arsenal Amid Contract Issue

Journalist Charles Watts has accepted that talented teenager Ethan Nwaneri could leave Arsenal before signing a professional contract.

What's the latest on Ethan Nwaneri and Arsenal?

Earlier this season, while still only 15 years of age, the youngster made headlines as he made his debut for the club.

Indeed, when coming on in the Premier League win away at Brentford – aged 15 years, 5 months and 23 days old – he became the club's youngest senior player of all-time, as well as the youngster player to ever feature in the English top flight.

Evidently, then, Nwaneri is one to keep an eye on with expectations already high about his potential. With that in mind, however,r it's no shock that rival clubs are keeping their eye on his progress.

Worryingly for the Gunners, Watts has named Chelsea and Manchester City as possible future destinations with the player's future up in the air as he can't sign a professional deal until he is 17.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts said: (3:36) “Chelsea, Manchester City, there's lots of clubs who are chasing Ethan Nwaneri and he can't sign a professional deal until he is 17.

"He's 16 now, he only turned 16 last month. He can sign scholarship terms. But there's clubs that are chasing him.

"And you know it's kind of an open secret really that he could leave Arsenal. We don't know, we're hoping hopefully he doesn't but he could.

"And there's lots of clubs are trying to get him and lure him away before he signs that first professional contract at 17."

What's been said about Ethan Nwaneri?

Considering Arsenal are pushing for a Premier League title with Hale End graduate Bukayo Saka a leading light in Mikel Arteta's team, it's hard to see why Nwaneri would want to leave.

What's more, he is certainly well-regarded within the club which seems to truly appreciate his top talent and sky-high potential.

For instance, Under-18 coach and former Arsenal academy star Jack Wilshere recently suing the player's praises.

Speaking to football.london, he said: "Us as coaches, that's what we focus on with Ethan, trying to give him the best platform, trying to give him a clear head. He has been exceptional in the Youth Cup as well and to be fair, he's been exceptional with what he's been doing, how he's managed school, his GCSEs. He does well at school as well by the way, which It's important – I know that Per really believes in that – 'better people, better players'.

jack-wilshere-arsene-wenger-arsenal-matthew-street

"So for him to manage that, then obviously it is a new world for him, people talking about him on social media, will he stay, will he go? To manage that as well and still perform in the Youth Cup. Whatever he does, I wish him all the best and he deserves it because of the sacrifices he's made."

With all that in mind, it sounds as though Nwaneri has no real reason to leave north London in the near future but perhaps his head will be turned by some exciting contract offers elsewhere once he turns 17.

Rob McElhenney Shares Hilarious Wrexham Tweet

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has won even more fans after he took BT Sport to task with a funny online post ahead of the club’s recent match.

What’s the latest Wrexham news?

The Red Dragons managed to secure promotion back into the Football League tonight when they managed to Boreham Wood 3-1.

Opposition player Lee Ndlovu scored inside the first minute but Elliot Lee managed to equalise for Wrexham before Paul Mullin scored twice to secure the 3-1 win.

Ahead of the game, however, BT Sport shared a tweet which showed McElhenney and fellow co-owner and Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds in prominent positions.

Evidently not wanting to take any of the credit away from his players, McElhenney playfully scolded BT for not putting all the focus on the likes of Luke Young, Ollie Palmer, Ben Foster and Mullin.

Indeed, he replied with an edited image to include the four Wrexham stars as he wrote: “Fixed it for you.”

It seems the club has never been far from the drama in recent times and this was well summed up in their draw away at Barnet last week.

Indeed, defender Callum McFadzean and manager Phil Parkinson were both sent off – which drew plenty of reaction from fans online.

That 0-0 draw left them one point closer to promotion and they completed their task with three points against Boreham Wood tonight.

Regardless of what happened, though, it seems as if their owners are doing things the right way and this was brilliantly summed up by McElhenney’s recent post.

Supporters on Twitter certainly seemed to agree. Here are some of the best reactions…

The praise didn’t stop there…

Ten Hag Eyeing Man United Move for "World-class" Player

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is thought to be eyeing a move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

What’s the latest on Man United and Mac Allister?

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a midfielder this summer, with a new addition in the middle of the pitch and a forward being their main transfer priorities.

Mac Allister has enjoyed a fine season for club and country, helping Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar last year. The central midfielder, who can also play in attacking or defensive midfield roles, has also been one of the Seagulls’ top performers, as per WhoScored, in their push for a European spot and an FA Cup final.

He has made 28 appearances for Brighton in all competitions, contributing to 12 goals, turning out in more advanced roles since the turn of the year. As a result, the 24-year-old's Transfermarkt valuation has increased from €16m (£14m) to a career-high €42m (£37m) during the campaign, and it looks as if his displays have caught the eye in Manchester.

Journalist Steve Bates shared a column for GiveMeSport in the last 48 hours, claiming Ten Hag held talks with director of football John Murtough, technical director Darren Fletcher and chief executive Richard Arnold during the recent international break, focusing on summer recruits.

He added that Mac Allister is on Ten Hag’s radar, with moves for big-money targets such as Declan Rice or Jude Bellingham potentially dependent on a Qatari takeover.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag

Should Man United sign Mac Allister?

Mac Allister appears to be at the peak of his powers and has been hailed as 'world-class' by members of the media earlier this year. He could be an extremely shrewd signing by United, given his versatility and impressive displays, with Mac Allister leading the way for Brighton when it comes to goals and shots per game. He is also the most fouled Brighton player and also ranks highly when it comes to dribbles per 90. [WhoScored]

Mac Allister has even outperformed every United player when it comes to average Premier League match rating aside from Bruno Fernandes, as per WhoScored, so would offer a solid option in a number of midfield roles.

That could come in extremely handy during Ten Hag’s second season, providing United once again guarantee European football. The Red Devils have found themselves short at times in midfield this season due to injuries to Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay and two separate suspensions for Casemiro, so signing someone like Mac Allister could be a brilliant move, and potentially it is one to keep an eye on.

Arsenal: Toney and Calvert-Lewin suggested for Arteta

Former Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs has suggested that the club should look at Ivan Toney or Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.

What has Gibbs said about Arsenal's attacking options?

Arsenal have found themselves slipping away in the Premier League title race having failed to win any of their last four games, but they have still scored in each of these matches.

Gabriel Jesus has been inconsistent in this run, as despite scoring against Liverpool and West Ham United, did not make an impact in the top-of-the-table clash away at his former side, Manchester City.

The Brazilian has had a positive, yet injury-stricken first season for Arsenal, helping propel them to the top of the league but missing a few months with a long-term layoff.

However, Gibbs believes that Mikel Arteta needs an alternative option as a central striker, and named two Premier League players he should target.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Gibbs suggested Everton's Calvert-Lewin and Brentford's Toney as more physical options that he would like to see added to the squad.

"[They need] maybe another striker up top as well. I wouldn't mind an Ivan Toney, or even a Calvert Lewin – you could probably pick him up for a bit cheaper if Everton go down," he stated.

"But someone like that, a threat in the air, and [who] just brings something different, I would say – a player with that kind of profile."

Do Arsenal need another striker?

Scoring goals has been the least of Arsenal's concerns this season, as they have failed to score in just two league games, while their attacking players have thrived.

Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard have all hit double figures for league goals, whilst the likes of Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Leandro Trossard and Reiss Nelson have all added firepower up front.

Arsenal are well-stocked in attacking areas and still have Emile Smith Rowe to return to full fitness, and could even bring back Folarin Balogun, who has thrived out on loan.

Unless there are departures up front, a striker may be lower down Arsenal's priority list for the summer, as extra midfield quality and defensive cover may be more useful.

Injuries to William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu have derailed Arsenal's title charge, and with 11 goals conceded in the last four games, it is clear that better cover for Saliba is needed beyond Rob Holding, who has disappointed in his appearances as a backup.

If Arsenal can reinforce these areas with quality and still have enough funds for a striker, it may be worth pursuing a deal for a recognised top-flight striker, but it is a position that they can perhaps afford not to strengthen in during the summer transfer window.

South African David Wiese hit boundaries of successive deliveries in the final over to ease Sussex to a four-wicket win over Kent in a low-scoring thriller in the NatWest T20 Blast at Hove.Chasing 141, after Tymal Mills had again impressed with 3 for 15, Sussex needed eight off the final over but after David Griffiths conceded a single and then bowled a wide, Wiese – who has extended his stay as second overseas player at Hove for another two weeks – drove to the extra cover boundary before guiding the next delivery to the third man rope to seal victory with three balls to spare. It was Sussex’s other overseas player, Ross Taylor, who set up the win with a measured 62 off 50 balls. Sussex were struggling on 68 for 4 after 12 overs in their response when Taylor was joined by Chris Jordan in a match-winning stand of 61 from 39 balls.Taylor struck offspinner James Tredwell for 16 off three balls in the 16th over to tilt the contest Sussex’s way and although both he and Jordan fell to catches in the deep off Mitch Claydon in the penultimate over, Wiese held his nerve to secure a third win out of four in the South Group for his side.Claydon took 3 for 25, having earlier bowled Ben Brown while Matt Coles also impressed, finishing with 1 for 17 and claiming the key early scalp of Sussex skipper Luke Wright, who was caught at deep square leg for 3.Kent had been bowled out for 140 off the final ball of their innings, having been put in, after some impressive work from Sussex’s seamers on a slow pitch.England international Jordan led the way with 3 for 18. In his first spell he removed Daniel Bell-Drummond with a slower ball and returned to the attack to have Alex Blake caught at cover and Darren Stevens at midwicket.Jordan was well backed up by left-armer Mills, whose searing pace made it tough for the Kent batsmen. Mills yorked Coles and then removed Tredwell and Griffiths in his final over to finish with 3 for 15 while Wiese took 2 for 33 including Kent captain Sam Northeast, who returned to form with 53 off 33 balls which included two fours and four sixes, all struck in the area between long on and mid-wicket before he mis-timed a leg-side pull allowing Wiese to take a simple return catch.Sussex’s seamers were well supported by leg-spinner Will Beer, who had the dangerous Sam Billings lbw sweeping as Kent’s innings tailed off alarmingly, with the last five wickets falling for nine runs.

Agarkar: Shardul Thakur selected at the right time

Uncapped Mumbai quick Shardul Thakur has been picked in the 17-member squad for the four-Test tour of the West Indies in July-August. The squad also includes fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has not played international cricket since March 2015 due to injuries. Virat Kohli will captain the team, while Ajinkya Rahane has been named vice-captain.Apart from batsman KL Rahul, none of the other players in the squad are part of the limited-overs tour to Zimbabwe immediately after the IPL in June. The series in West Indies is India’s first Test assignment since the home Tests against South Africa in October and November. India’s selectors made only two changes to that squad – fast bowler Varun Aaron and allrounder Gurkeerat Singh Mann were left out.Thakur had two strong showings in successive Ranji Trophy seasons. In 2014-15, he finished as the joint highest wicket-taker, alongside R Vinay Kumar, with 48 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 20.81. He followed that with 41 wickets in the 2015-16 season, the highest for Mumbai, to help the side clinch its 41st Ranji Trophy title. Overall, Thakur has 133 wickets in 37 first-class matches at an average of 27.53. He was also part of the India A squad that played four-day matches at home against South Africa A and Australia A last year.Shami has not played international cricket since the 2015 World Cup semi-final against Australia and he later revealed he had bowled through the tournament while battling pain from his knee injury. Despite that, he picked up 17 wickets in seven matches in the tournament. Following a surgery, Shami made a return to competitive cricket, playing two matches each in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami was picked for the ODI and T20I tour of Australia in January but was ruled out after suffering a Grade-2 hamstring injury. The injury also forced him to miss the Asia Cup T20.
